Questions to Ask a Therapist in New York

Choosing a therapist in New York isn’t just about credentials or availability. Asking a few thoughtful questions can help you get a clearer sense of whether a therapist might be a good fit for you.

You don’t need to ask all of these — even one or two can be enough to get useful information.

Experience and focus

  • What kinds of issues do you most often work with?

  • Do you have experience with what I’m dealing with right now?

  • Do you primarily work with individuals, couples, or both?

Approach to therapy

  • How would you describe your approach to therapy?

  • Do you use specific modalities or frameworks?

  • How structured or open-ended are your sessions?

The therapy relationship

  • What does therapy typically feel like with you?

  • How active are you during sessions?

  • How do you work with clients who feel stuck or uncertain?

Practical details

  • Do you offer telehealth, in-person sessions, or both?

  • What are your fees, and do you accept insurance?

  • What is your cancellation policy?

Questions to ask yourself afterward

Just as important as the answers is how the conversation felt:

  • Did I feel comfortable talking with this person?

  • Did I feel listened to and understood?

  • Could I imagine working with them over time?

There’s no perfect set of questions — and no perfect therapist. Trust your experience of the conversation as much as the information you receive.
